From an Employer’s to an Employee’s Marketplace, the Change in the Talent Landscape in Ireland

(04 Jul 2017)

Unemployment levels have been falling sharply year on year in Ireland, following a peak in 2012 when unemployment reached 15%, to circa 6% today. This changes the landscape for talent in Ireland.

An employer’s market is characterised by a number of traits, including:

  • High unemployment levels
  • Less choice for candidates
  • Roles advertised attract high number of applicants
  • Employers can be selective
  • Candidates value job security before pay
  • Candidates are risk averse and less willing to leave their current organisation

An employee’s market is characterised the following traits:

  • Low unemployment levels
  • More employers are recruiting
  • Candidates can be selective
  • Candidates are less risk averse and willing to change from current employers
  • Pay differentials are noticed
  • There is a lower response to job adverts

In Ireland, we are now back in an employee’s market after nearly a decade as an employer’s market as the following chart illustrates.

An employer’s market can lead to bad habits and these can pose a challenge to getting and keeping the best talent in an employee’s market when a new approach is needed.

At the Wheel Conference 2017, 2into3 Director Dennis O’Connor delivered a Talent Strategy Masterclass where participants learned how to attract and retain talent in an employee’s marketplace.  Participants were presented with the following 5-step talent strategy development process;

Participants were also presented with the latest 2into3 Not-for-Profit Quarterly Recruitment Monitor which showed that there was a 15% increase in management roles advertised in the sector in Quarter 2, 2017. The full report can be found here.
