Funding Irish Sport; Can Philanthropy Play A Role? (2013)

Sport is a vital and intrinsic part of Irish society, from the local clubs that give so much to communities all over Ireland, to the national and international success of our elite sports men/women and teams. Despite the success that has been achieved over the last number of years both in terms of increasing participation in sport and improved consistency of performance on the international stage, funding remains one of the biggest challenges to the continued growth and development of Irish sport.

Philanthropy has come to play a major part of funding sports in many countries around the world and this paper proposes that Irish sport would benefit by adopting a similar approach.

This paper has been prepared by 2into3 in collaboration with the Federation of Irish Sport and we hope that it will stimulate debate, lead to more comprehensive research and offer insights into how philanthropy can be used to increase investment and participation at all levels of Irish sport.
